Abbey of Montecassino is the starting point of this religious itinerary that goes through a part of Ciociaria, looking for places of spiritual interest and artistic importance.

Montecassino is the place where Saint Benedict, patron saint of Europe, lived and preached, writing the Benedictine Rule that became the founding principle for western monasticism. The Abbey became a model for future developments, unfortunately its protected site always made it an object of strategic importance and it was sacked or destroyed a number of times. It was rebuilt and reached the apex of its fame in the 11th century under the abbot Desiderius, who later became Pope Victor III. The number of monks rose to over two hundred, and the library, the manuscripts produced in the scriptorium and the school of manuscript illuminators became famous throughout the West, as a result the unique Beneventan script flourished there during Desiderius' abbacy.

After visiting Montecassino, part of the national Benedictine Route, the way leads to the Comino Valley, in search of particular places of religious and folkloristic interest: the place where the Infant Jesus appeared, as local people tell, becoming a great destination of pilgrimages from all over the world; The Saint Mary’s Cathedral of Atina, Romanic Church built between the 10th and 18th Century; the Canneto Sanctuary in the Liri Valley, dedicated to the Black Madonna, a statue of Mary in which she is depicted with dark or black skin, destination of an ancient pilgrimage from the nearest regions that takes place every August.
